COUNTLESS GIFS of JULIE MOLINA: When you cross over...

So let’s talk about vulnerability. There’s so many scenes throughout the show where Julie shows her fear, her anxiety and her grief but it all pales in comparison to her emotions in this episode. I am going to talk about the dahlia scene at a later time but let’s talk about this scene for a minute. Julie is a spark and she gives music her all, she is energetic; there’s many instances to her being called “bright”, “angelic”, a “wrecking ball” (right after this scene, Luke calls her a “star”). But here, right here, in this scene, there’s a stillness, a tenderness to her and then her words hit and the audience understands. Julie Molina is trying to keep it together, it makes even more sense when she chokes up as she says the words “when you cross over, if…” (See: top gif 2). She knows she is about to lose the three people that have held her together this past month, become part of her, brought back her passion and she’s not ready to lose them but she knows she has no choice, just like she had no choice when it came to her mother. She is baring her wounded soul to Luke and that, in itself, portrays the evolution of her character arc. It shows she trusts these guys, she trusts the path her mom has paved for her (and the way she knows it’s her mother’s doing, that Luke, Reggie and Alex were Rose’s gift to Julie, it makes this scene even more impactful because she now has to let more of her mother go). But that’s not all, Luke reacts in full acceptance to “thank [mom] for bringing you to me” because he knows too but he understands it in a different way. The guys don’t know everything but they do know that they were the ones saved by Julie, they were the ones gifted, not the other way around. It’s this idea of both parties acknowledging the other as the reason for their livelihood (that they’re dependent on each other for strength and love) that is the ultimate form of vulnerability.
